Hypnosis Myths Debunked
What It’s Actually Like to Work with Your Subconscious
Let’s be honest — when most people hear the word hypnosis, they don’t think “healing.”
They think: swinging pocket watches. Mind control. Barking like a dog on stage.
Basically, stuff that belongs in a Vegas show or a cartoon — not in a legitimate wellness space.
I get it. I used to be one of those skeptics, too.
But the truth is, real hypnotherapy couldn’t be further from those old-school myths. It’s not weird, it’s not woo-woo (unless you like a little woo), and it’s absolutely not about giving up control.
Hypnotherapy is actually one of the most natural, empowering ways to work with your subconscious mind — the part of you that stores your habits, your emotional patterns, your deepest beliefs, and your inner wiring.
So, let’s clear some things up.
Myth #1: “You’ll make me cluck like a chicken.”
Nope. Not unless you really want to (in which case, I won’t judge).
Stage hypnosis and clinical hypnotherapy are two completely different things.
Stage hypnosis is for entertainment. It’s scripted, designed for a crowd, and often relies on peer pressure and suggestion to get people to play along.
Hypnotherapy, on the other hand, is a therapeutic tool. It’s quiet. Deep. Intentionally guided. And it's collaborative. You’re fully aware, relaxed, and in control the entire time. There’s no manipulation, no programming, and no one “making” you do anything.
You're the one steering the ship — I’m just here to help you access the map.
Myth #2: “You won’t be able to wake me up.”
This one’s an easy fix: you’re not asleep to begin with.
Hypnosis isn’t unconsciousness — it’s actually a focused, relaxed state where your brain waves slow down (like when you're just about to drift off to sleep or completely absorbed in a good book). You’re aware the whole time. You could open your eyes, move your body, or end the session if you wanted to.
You don’t get stuck in hypnosis any more than you get stuck in a daydream.
You’ll “wake up” the same way you always do — probably feeling calmer, lighter, and more clear than when we started.
Myth #3: “I’m too strong-willed to be hypnotized.”
Good news — hypnosis has nothing to do with being weak-willed or gullible.
In fact, people who are intelligent, creative, or analytical often make excellent hypnotherapy clients. Why? Because they can focus, visualize, and use their imagination, all of which help in accessing the subconscious mind.
Hypnosis isn’t about giving up your will. It’s about aligning with it more deeply.
You’re not “out of it” — you’re just deeply tuned in.
Myth #4: “Hypnotherapy is a last resort.”
A lot of people come to hypnotherapy when nothing else has worked — and it can absolutely help in those moments. But it’s not just for breakdowns or rock bottoms.
Hypnotherapy is powerful for:
Breaking old habits and subconscious patterns
Healing past emotional wounds
Building self-confidence and self-trust
Shifting anxiety, self-doubt, and limiting beliefs
Connecting more deeply with your intuition and purpose
It’s not a magic fix — but it is a tool for real change, from the inside out.
If talk therapy feels too “surface,” or if you know what your issues are but still feel stuck in them, hypnotherapy helps bridge the gap between knowing and shifting.
So… what is a session actually like?
First of all, we talk. I want to know what’s going on in your life, how you're feeling, and what you want to shift. You’ll never be rushed, judged, or made to talk about anything you’re not ready for.
Once we’re clear on what we’re working on, I’ll guide you into a deeply relaxed state — think meditation, but co-piloted — and we’ll begin working with the subconscious part of your mind.
That might include:
Inner child healing
Rewriting limiting beliefs
Releasing emotional blocks
Visualizations and resourcing
Guided imagery and positive suggestion
You’ll hear everything I say. You’ll remember it afterward. You’ll feel safe and in control — the entire time.
Working with your subconscious should feel sacred, not scary.
If you’ve been curious about hypnotherapy but hesitant because of what you’ve seen in movies or on TV, I hope this helps clear the air.
There’s no weirdness. No gimmicks. Just a safe space to explore what’s beneath the surface — and rewrite the story that’s been holding you back.
You deserve healing that meets you where you are — and honors all the parts of you that are ready to grow.
